Hazarts Candy & Nuts, Ltd. is one of the oldest and best-loved candy stores in Arvada and Westminster, two neighboring suburbs of Denver, which like to call themselves the “Twin Cities.” The company was founded way back in 1924 by Abigail Throckmorton Hazarts, a daughter of one of the oldest families in Arvada. She founded the store, together with her sister Clara Throckmorton, in what is now known as “Olde Town.” The store became a magnet for children for generations; anyone who has grown up in either Arvada or Westminster has wonderful memories of Hazards Candy and Nuts. In 1942, at the height of the Second World War, when most of the young men in America were off fighting in either the Pacific or the European theater, Abigail and Clara opened a store in Westminster. They have never expanded beyond the “Twin Cities,” but in those cities their name is a legend: Hazarts Candy & Nuts is one of the best-known brands in the entire area. It was in 1975 that Philomena Hazarts, Abigail’s granddaughter, established the Hazarts Trophy for Community Supporter and Booster of the Year. Hazarts itself being so deeply a part of the local community, wanted to encourage others to become a part of the community too. The Hazarts Trophy is now one of the most highly-regarded awards in the entire community.
